An attempt was made to characterize roughness using a laser and an optical detector which outputs precise information about the roughness change. The performance of the laser detector system is evaluated by modeling the sensor system and using a sinusoidal profile model as a simulated rough surface. The influence of surface roughness and sensor structure on the system performance is studied. The profile is also reproduced for comparison with the actual profile. A wood surface was chosen to be the test surface because of its unusual reflectivity. A two-dimensional profile analysis was made to find a relationship between the roughness and some characteristic parameter values of the detected profile.
